Adventures on the Sailing Vessel Moorea

Moorea & Crew

We cut the dock lines from Everett, WA in the summer, 2005 to embark on a world circumnavigation in our sailboat, named Moorea, a 35' Dufour Sloop.

Currently in the Caribbean, we plan to transit the Panama Canal by March and make our way home.  We will keep you posted along the way of our adventures.

The Caribbean, Martinique Island

The sight of land is glorious after a 24 day passage across the Atlantic.  The oceans brilliant blue water and a canopy of stars with a waxing, then waning moon kept us company as we transited the vast sea.  Time flew by and we were in the zone, with 15-20 knot E to NE trade winds pushing us along the way.  A cross swell made the boat constantly lurch from beam to beam, a motion that became wearing on the body and mind.  But as we counted down the 2839 nautical miles to Martinique island, we managed through the nuisance and found ways to keep our spirits up.  Reading, fishing, eating and emailing were part of our daily routine.

We landed on Martinique island Christmas Eve morning, had enough time to walk on the shore in search for a few fresh veggies and to stretch our wobbly, sea fatigued legs.  Marin town is medium sized, full of French ex-pats, locals & yachties, a protected harbor packed like sardines with sailing vessels, a popular spot for the cruisers, the chandlery is full of French brands for the boat, which is perfect for our French made Dufour.  Boat parts we find difficult to obtain in the States, is a breeze here.

Since family was not accessible, like many lone cruisers, we share our holidays with each other.  Ohana Kai, our long time buddy boat & Redwood coast, a couple we would bump into along our travels made up our party for some Christmas cheer.

As the New Year approaches, we look forward to the new islands and people we will encounter and feel blessed that we have safely traveled thus far.  Happy New Year!
